Q: What is Rust Racers and how do I play it?

Rust Racers is a collection of Gamemodes for Garry's Mod, an extremely popular and versatile sandbox game, powered by the award winning Source Engine and the Lua Scripting Language.

In order to play Rust Racers you need to have a valid Steam Account and own a copy of Garry's Mod.
Playing Rust Racers is 100% free.

The game server will attempt to send you the requried Workshop collection when connecting to a game

Q: How does Match Making work?

Match Making is an automated server creation system that uses a formula based on your total wins, losses and upgrade level to assign you a value that we use to find players with similar experience. The service requires that you are signed in to our website with a Steam Account that has a copy of Garry's Mod. Once you have signed into our website using Steam you can access the Match Making service from the main menu.

To find a new game press Find Lobby. To join an existing Lobby you can enter the Lobby ID in the textbox before pressing Find Lobby.

If you accidentally close the lobby tab the system will try to restore you to your old lobby if you re-visit the page within a timely manner.

The lobby will create a new game server when 70% of all players in the lobby is ready to play.

You can see a list of available chat emotes by typing /ratings in chat.

Q: Why are there no servers right now or why are they empty?

If the serverlist is empty it means that there are no active sessions for the moment.
This does NOT mean that you can't play, It only means that there are no active servers for the moment.

To play on one of our servers, you have to create it yourself using the Match Making system.

This works just like ranked games in CS:GO. You enter a lobby and you press READY and you get sent to a game.

This process is fully automatic and will only ask for permission to launch Garry's Mod the first time.

Q: So can't I play?

You can play as much as you want. Press Match Making and the rest should be easy.

Q: How many players do I need in my lobby to start a server?

For the moment being, you need to be atleast two players in a lobby to play.
We might increase this number in the future but it all depends on the demand on servers and our ability to provide new machines.

Q: The lobby doesn't seem to work for me

Make sure that you are running the latest version of your browser.
The steam browser rarely works as it is running an outdated version of Chromium.
We recommend that you use either latest version of Firefox or Chrome.

Q: Can I use the cars in sandbox?

Yes, The cars work in any gamemode and should work in multiplayer even with a tickrate as low as 10.

Q: How do I download the cars?

You can download the cars from the Steam Workshop.
All released cars are included in this collection:
Rust Racers - Mad Max Cars in Gmod

Q: How do the Seasons work?

In Rust Racers, each Race Season consists of 1000 completed races across all our servers and the best player at the end of each season receives a big cash reward.
How long a season lasts depends on how many players are actively racing. In theory: With all servers filled with an average of 20 completed races per hour per server a season would last roughly 8-9 hours.

Q: Will there be more Cars/Gamemodes/Upgrades?

If this gamemode becomes sufficiently popular we will make a great effort to expand the content to provide you with many hours of entertainment :)

Q: I see errors when joining a game?

Make sure that you have cl_allowdownload set to 1 and cl_downloadfilter set to "" in your config file before joining a lobby.
Your config.cfg file is located in the Steam/SteamApps/Garrysmod/Garrysmod/cfg/ folder.

Q: HOW Are you starting my Garry's Mod through a website??

Our Match Making system is built on the Steam Browser Protocol. This simple protocol tells your browser what it should do when you go to certain links.
The Match Making system will create a new server on our end and send you the IP, Port and Password.
This information is then used to build a URL that starts Garry's Mod looking like this:
steam://connect/IP_Adress:PortNumber/Password
Once the URL is constructed we can tell your browser to visit the Link which will tell Steam to start Garry's Mod and connect to the server you have just created.
